The Warner Bros. film “Hereafter” — a “supernatural thriller” — has locations shot in France, London, Maui and the Bay Area, including tiny Crockett in Contra Costa County.
The project this week drew a film crew with superstars Matt Damon and Bay Area native Clint Eastwood to the C&H Sugar refinery there. Eastwood is directing the movie.
The film company was able to keep everything pretty low-profile during the Jan. 19 visit, a tough task in such a close-knit community.
“It was very quiet,” said Dan Robertson, editor and publisher of the Crockett Signal. “They were only here a few hours, and nobody said anything.”
The only inkling came when a large number of trucks parked overnight Monday on Rolph Avenue outside the factory.
“It’s amazing how much equipment is involved in one day’s filming,” Robertson said.
Warner Bros. contacted the Crockett Chamber of Commerce in December and later asked for assistance in getting a county film production permit, chamber President Aimee Lohr said.
She said C&H and the production company asked the chamber to keep quiet about the shoot out of concern that it would attract an overwhelming number of people.
“It’s not every day they have something that big coming into town,” Lohr said. “It was exciting to know they were there.”
The company broke at midday to have lunch in the Scout Hall on Loring Avenue. While Eastwood stopped in at the hall, Damon
apparently dined elsewhere. The buzz around Sugar Town is that the refinery plays the role of a flour mill, where Damon’s character is employed as a forklift operator.
According to online sources, the film company came to the Bay Area from Maui on Tuesday; local shooting also was scheduled for Nob Hill in San Francisco and Emeryville. They depart today for London.
“Hereafter” is expected to be released around the Christmas holidays, according to imdb.com.
