Sep 29 Generous friend George Clooney 0
Filed in: General News

Matt Damon likes George Clooney because he has a great house.

The Informant actor befriended George when they starred in Ocean’s 11 in 2001, and has maintained the relationship because George loves splashing cash on his pals.

The 38-year-old star said: “George has this beautiful place in Italy where he brings all of his friends and he’s an amazingly generous person.

“As a friend of George, what you really need to do is try and stay on his list because he’s got an incredible life that he shares with all his friends.”

Despite his desire to stay in George’s good books, Matt is quick to mock the older star’s gambling abilities.

He added to “George is a loser. We were in Vegas and he was like, ‘I have never won anything in my life gambling.’ I said, ‘I know how to play. I’ll show you. Don’t worry about it.’

“Then, he lost 25 straight blackjack hands in a row, which I think is a record. I would never have believed it unless I saw it happen.

“Afterwards, he slipped a cheque under my hotel room door for $2 500 that said, ‘For services rendered,’ but it wasn’t signed, so I couldn’t cash it.”

Sep 29 Queensland man misses out on $1 million on Hot Seat 0
Filed in: General News

A QUEENSLAND man missed out on a $1 million payday from a TV game show after being “freaked out” and wrongly answering the million-dollar question.

Buderim obstetrician Jeff Tarr last night departed Channel Nine’s Hot Seat with only $1000 after being the second person to be asked the final question in the show’s history.

Dr Tarr, who has delivered more than 5000 babies including Bindi and Robert Irwin, set a new record after answering 14 straight questions without any aides during the episode.

But he wrongly chose actor Matt Damon when asked which American actor’s original surname was “Horowitz” as the final question.

The correct answer was Winona Ryder.

Dr Tarr, 60, last night said he felt he knew the correct answer but changed his mind at the last minute and went for Damon.

“My gut was feeling was Winona … but being the million-dollar one I just freaked out,” Dr Tarr said. “I over-analysed the question. Everything changes on that million dollar question. You just feel it. I was quite amazed. The whole atmosphere changes.”

He said he had always loved trivia, read widely and had a library as the biggest room in his house.

His wife, Christine, said even though she knew the result she was still very excited watching with friends.

Sep 29 Damon fan wins auction prize, plans to attack the star 0
Filed in: General News

San Diego, California businessman Jeff Jacobs bid $50,000 (GBP33,300) at a weekend auction, so his wife could play a part in an unnamed Damon project.

Jacob’s wife told the Las Vegas Journal-Review she planned to “attack him” when asked what she’d do upon meeting her movie hero.

The auction was held as part of former tennis ace Andre Agassi’s charity weekend in Sin City. Other top items included soccer lessons from David Beckham ($60,000/GBP40,000), and the chance to vacation with Agassi and his wife Steffi Graf in Georgia.

(This one is really strange. I would like more information on it)

Sep 29 Ellen Barkin’s cougar moment 0
Filed in: General News , Movie News

ELLEN Barkin seemed to have a flashback when she met Matt Damon as she was heading home the other day on West 12th Street, where Damon was filming a scene for “The Adjustment Bureau,” based on a Philip K. Dick story. Barkin played a cougar who tried to seduce Damon in “Ocean’s Thirteen.” After a brief chat on the street, Barkin, in a Mae West moment, rubbed Damon’s head, and said, “Come on over and see me after you finish,” nodding to the building where she lives. Damon laughed and went back to work.

Sep 25 Damon and Clooney Team Up for Hamdan v Rumsfeld 0
Filed in: Movie News

Clooney or Matt Damon?

Answer! Matt Damon! Apparently The Informant! was powerful enough to allow Matt Damon to boot George Clooney out of a role and send him to the directors chair. Well, that’s not the whole story, we’ll get to that below, but it appears that Damon will be starring in Hamdan v Rumsfeld, which was originally a role for Clooney who will now be directing the film instead.

At one point we had heard about a script called The Challenge, that was being written by Aaron Sorkin, and that Clooney would possibly be taking on the lead role as Charles Swift. Well, they decided that something just wasn’t working, so they gave the film a new name and did some re-adjusting…

According to Damon on the red carpet for the UK premiere of The Informant, the switch came about because “George just wasn’t right for the part, thank God, so I got to play it.” He then went on to joke with FemaleFirst that Clooney “gets enough good roles, he doesn’t need all the good ones, he’s got to leave some for the rest of us!” Don’t worry Damon, something tells me you’re doing just fine.

As for what the film is about, Damon briefly stated, “It’s about the so called ‘War On Terror’, but set in a courtroom.” And to go one step further with that, the film will be a dramatization of the court case about a chauffeur, who was captured in Afghanistan and shipped to notorious US detention centre Guantanamo Bay. Damon will play his lawyer Chris Swift, who eventually managed to take his case as far as the US Supreme Court to try and who was kicked out of the Navy for his work on this case.

As much as I love watching Clooney on screen, he’s an amazing director and since he has a few movies coming out with his face all over the posters, it’s good timing for him to hop back behind the camera and make another great film. With Sorkin writing away at what seems like a quite meaty script and Matt Damon in the lead, it sounds like we may have a real treat in store for us. Damon and Clooney are possibly the two best people to a court drama!

Do you think that the long time friends will be able to bring the courtroom drama to life?

The forecast for Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs was that it would earn $25-30 million over the weekend, and the 3D animated film wound up at the high end of that forecast, with an estimated $30.1 million, the studio said Sunday. Not much hope had been held out for the three other new releases, and they performed just about as poorly as predicted. The Informant! starring Matt Damon opened in second place with a moderate $10.5 million. Love Happens drew an estimated $8.5 million, while Jennifer’s Body could only collect about $6.8 million. Last week’s winner, Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All By Myself dropped 57 percent to $10 million to place third and bring its total to date to $37.9 million.

Sep 24 Meet the real Informant! 0
Filed in: Movie News

The movie poster screams “Matt Damon is ‘The Informant!’ ”

But the poster is only half-true.

Pensacola resident Mark Whitacre is the real informant. Golden-boy movie star Damon just plays him on the big screen in the dark comedy released last week by filmmaker Steven Soderbergh.

“My wife,” Whitacre said with a sly smile, “thinks I’m a lot better looking than Matt Damon.”

Whitacre, 52, can smile easy now.

But for more than a decade, his life was mired in a web of deceit, corporate intrigue and mental illness that eventually cost him his high-paying corporate job and led to 8½ years in prison, concluding in December 2006 at the federal prison at Saufley Field in Pensacola.

Whitacre, an Ohio native, was a young, rising executive at Archer Daniels Midland, an Illinois-based agribusiness conglomerate. He served as president of the company’s BioProducts Division in the early 1990s.

In 1992, Whitacre told the FBI that ADM executives were involved in a price-fixing conspiracy to control the price of lysine, an amino acid used to boost livestock production.

The FBI recruited Whitacre to be an informant, rigging him and his briefcases with recording equipment so he could tape incriminating company schemes. He was an informant for more than three years.

ADM eventually settled with the government. It paid more than $100 million in fines and hundreds of millions more to class-action plaintiffs and customers.

But while Whitacre was informing for the FBI, he also was embezzling $9.5 million from ADM.

He was convicted of tax evasion and fraud and sentenced to 10 years in prison, but served less because of good behavior. He also repaid the money to the company.

After his release in 2006, Whitacre landed a job at Cypress Systems Inc., a California-based biotech firm. The company allowed him to open an office on North Ninth Avenue in Pensacola so his family could remain here. He’s the chief operations officer, with most of his work done on the road.

His wife, Ginger Whitacre, is a kindergarten teacher at Warrington Elementary School. She was the school’s Teacher of the Year in 2007.
