Jul 30 Matt Damon On His Political Documentary, Criticism Of Palin 0
Filed in: General News , Movie News

PASADENA, Calif. — How does Matt Damon make reciting the Declaration of Independence exciting?

“You just read it,” says the actor-writer-producer. “Seriously. It is an incredible document. I think people either forget about it or have been taught it too early in their lives. It’s a document worth reading and rereading every single year because it’s the principles in that document that we should be loyal to and fight for and struggle for, rather than whichever government is in power.”

“The Bourne Ultimatum” star reads the declaration in “The People Speak,” an upcoming History Channel movie co-executive produced by Damon and based on Howard Zinn’s book, “A People’s History of the United States.” Joining Damon in reading letters, speeches and text from famous and not-so famous Americans are such stars as Josh Brolin, Viggo Mortensen, Morgan Freeman and Marisa Tomei.

“The material is inherently dramatic,” says Tomei, who recited the words of factory worker Harriet Hanson Robinson at a 2003 celebration of the millionth copy of Zinn’s book sold and in the documentary. “You don’t have to wonder, ‘How am I going to rephrase that?’ or ‘How am I going to make it through this scene?’ It’s all right there for you in the words of these impassioned people.”

One political topic Damon is avoiding is Sarah Palin. Damon drew headlines last September when he told The Associated Press during an interview that the Republican vice presidential candidacy was like “a bad Disney movie.” He said he had “no idea” what Palin would do now that she has stepped down as Alaska’s governor. He joked that he’s still in shock about the attention his remarks received.

“I couldn’t believe it,” said Damon. “Certainly, that whole campaign was a next-generation campaign in the sense that YouTube and all these different things existed that weren’t really around in 2004. Campaigning is different now than it was a couple of cycles ago. I think that little interview was a small part of that.”

Matt Damon took a break from visiting clean water projects in India to thank the more than 103,000 ONE members who signed our petition supporting the Durbin-Corker Water for the World Act—a bill that would bring first-time, sustainable clean water and sanitation access to 100 million of the world’s poorest people.

Hear it straight from Matt in this new video:

On July 1, a team of 40 ONE volunteers, staff, interns and partners flooded the Senate with our petition signatures asking our senators to cosponsor the bipartisan Water for the World Act. Since then, five new senators have signed on as cosponsors, bringing the total count to 14 and the bill that much closer to becoming law.

Jul 18 Matt Damon portrays Warren County native in movie 0
Filed in: General News , Movie News

Twenty years ago, Mark Whitacre became the youngest divisional president at Archer Daniels Midland and soon found himself at the center of the largest price fixing case in U.S. history at the time.

Whitacre, a 1975 graduate of Little Miami High School, is the subject of two books, a documentary and the upcoming Steven Soderbergh movie, “The Informant!” which stars Matt Damon as Whitacre.

Although he cannot discuss the film until it is released in October, Whitacre, 52, said he received an advanced copy of the script and also helped supply many of the props to keep the movie consistent.

In 1992, while already embezzling money from ADM, Whitacre became an informant for the FBI regarding the company’s price fixing of common food ingredients.

But Whitacre says that without the insistence of his wife, Ginger, he may never have come clean.

“She’s really the whistle blower and the hero,” he said. “I give her full credit.”

The FBI was called in to investigate a possible case of sabotage at one of Whitacre’s plants. He knew there was nothing going on, but Whitacre said he needed to buy time with his boss to investigate why their products were being contaminated.

Whitacre confessed to his wife and told her his concerns, at which time she told him if he did not tell the FBI agents, who were on their way to his house, then she would.

“A day or two later, I was wearing a wire everyday,” he said. “It’s not easy to do that. You’re building a company during the day and tearing it apart at night.”

Whitacre said his mental state suffered from the stress he was under, putting in 100-hour work weeks and traveling often while trying to provide the FBI with the information then needed to make a case against ADM.

After two and half years, the FBI moved forward with their case and Whitacre was outed as the mole. ADM turned him in for his increasing amounts of fraud, as Whitacre says he began writing larger checks to himself to provide for his family after he was found out by ADM.

“Greed and ego got in the way. I was writing my own severance,” he said.

Whitacre spent eight and half years in prison after being convicted on fraud and tax evasion charges.

Aside from the movie, which the Whitacres have seen thanks to an advanced screening provided by Warner Bros., Whitacre said, “The real story is coming out of this on the other end.”

The day after he left prison, Whitacre got a job with Cypress Systems Inc., a biotechnology firm, where he was recently promoted to president of operations. He said his family, who now live in Florida, grew stronger while he was in prison, with Ginger visiting him every weekend, often bringing their three children.

“You can either choose to get better or get bitter. We made a choice to get better,” he said.

Jul 18 Matt Damon’s Entourage Cameo Revealed! 0
Filed in: General News

Matt Damon has shot a top-secret airport scene for Entourage’s sixth-season finale. “It wasn’t hard to get him,” executive producer, Doug Ellin, tells TV Guide Magazine. “Matt wanted to do something that focused on his charity, One By One, which helps kids all over the world.”

When Ellin was recently honored by Chrysalis, an organization that helps L.A.’s homeless, he felt compelled to reach out to his famous friends for donations. “I came up with a similar idea for Matt,” explains Ellin, who also nabbed basketball star Lebron James for the finale. “Lebron and Matt have a scene together and they just kill it!”

“They were just amazing,” concurs cast member Kevin Connolly (Eric). “Doug wrote a scene where we’re all at the airport together. Matt was all smiles. He was definitely there to have fun.”

“Matt gets Vince to make a massive donation. He’s like, ‘Bro—whip out your checkbook!,’” reveals co-star Emmanuelle Chriqui (Sloan).

“The joke is that Matt is very passionate about his charity—almost in a stalkerish kind of way,” says Adrian Grenier (Vince). “Vince becomes intimated by his intensity. He ends up bullying Vince into giving much more than he should.” The season finale airs Oct. 4.

And here’s the skinny on former Friends star David Schwimmer’s August 2 guest appearance. “David comes in as himself to discuss projects with my character, who is a TV agent,” says Gary Cole (Andrew). “He pokes fun at himself and Friends. We have a meeting about what his next TV project should be.”

Thanks to Lucy for the heads up!

Jul 6 Damon backs Jackman for sexiest man alive title 0
Filed in: General News

Damon, 38, who was named sexiest man alive by People magazine in 2007, was happy to hand over the mantle to the ‘X-Men’ star last year, and is hoping the 40-year-old actor triumphs again, reports

‘Maybe he can be the first to do it back-to-back. I’ll start campaigning for that,’ said Damon.

Damon was equally as outspoken about the men he doesn’t want to see bestowed with the accolade.

The ‘Oceans 11′ star joked it would be a travesty if his co-stars in the 2001 movie Brad Pitt, who triumphed in 1995 and 2000, or George Clooney, who bagged the top spot in 1996 and 2007, won the honour again.

‘It would be absolutely intolerable. So, no, I don’t want either of those guys to three-peat,’ he quipped.
