Sep 28 Coalition Pledges $400 Million 0
Filed in: Charitable Causes , General News

NEW YORK — More than a dozen non-governmental organizations, some of them coalitions of charities, foundations and companies, pledged more than $400 million in various efforts to improve access to clean water and sanitation in the developing world.

The effort, dubbed the “Global Health Mega-Commitment on Water and Sanitation” for the Clinton Global Initiative, aims to reach 8.5 million people and provide a billion liters of clean water to developing areas over the next several years.

Among the most visible donors: Napo Pharmaceuticals Inc, with a $300 million pledge for anti-diarrheal drugs over seven to eight years in parts of Africa; the actor Matt Damon, who is pledging $1 million for one year through his H20 Africa Foundation and the ONEXONE foundation; Procter & Gamble Co. with an $18.5 million donation over two years; and PepsiCo Inc.’s philanthropic arm, which is partnering with a coalition called WaterPartners International to deliver some $4 million in grants and micro-credit loans to India over three years.

In a news conference at former President Bill Clinton’s annual philanthropic gathering, Mr. Damon recounted at length his recent trips to Africa and said a water-well near a village was the only thing that made it possible for a 14-year-old Zambian girl he met to fulfill her dream of becoming a nurse in Lusaka, the country’s capital and largest city.

“I was 14 once,” Mr. Damon said, adding that his dream was to “go to New York and become an actor.” He said his trips to Africa were “kind of like going back to college,” as he learned about microfinance, among other things.

Mr. Damon said the statistic that motivates his recent philanthropy is that “every 15 seconds, a child under the age of five dies from lack of water and clean sanitation.”

Sep 18 Brand New Layout! 4
Filed in: Site Updates

I want to thank the fantastic and amazing Lucy for designing this gray layout for the site a long time ago which I finally got around to using! I did not even realize that the previous layout had been up for almost a year! That is a crazy long time and I hope you guys like the change because I think that is a very artsy and creative layout, a change the site could use since we had a very professional layout before. Please comment and let us know what you think of it :)

Besides the long overdue layout change, I also decided to take the plunge and transfer the site to WordPress! I had put it off and thought that FanUpdate would do but the site has really progressed to the point where it needs a more fully functioning blogging tool. Right now, the change seems worthwhile!

Just a reminder, I AM NOT MATT DAMON! People have got to stop writing me and commenting the site as if I am Matt Damon, I DO NOT KNOW MATT DAMON OR HIS MANAGEMENT. Especially after the Sarah Palin controversy, people still write me as if I am Matt Damon, please STOP!

Sep 14 Matt Damon, Wyclef Jean help Haitian storm victims 0
Filed in: Uncategorized

CABARET, Haiti- Matt Damon kept his cool as he helped distribute food from a truck that got stuck in the mud in a western Haitian town where Hurricane Ike left hundreds of people homeless and hungry.

He arrived with Haitian-born singer Wyclef Jean to hand out rice, beans and cooking oil in Cabaret, a town that saw 60 people die in flash floods when Ike grazed Haiti last week.

Things got rough when the truck carrying 300 bags of food ran into a ditch, forcing the rest of the caravan to stop. Hundreds of Haitians mobbed an SUV carrying the celebrities, chanting “Wyclef!”

“I want to see Wyclef because he is my artist,” said Jean Sadrac, an unemployed 25-year-old. “I want Wyclef to help me with money or water.”

Jean clambered onto the roof of the SUV to calm the crowd, while bodyguards helped Damon make his way toward the truck with the food. He reached it easily; nobody recognized him.

Damon said he enjoyed being in a place where few people have seen his movies.

“It’s nice, it’s really easy to move through a crowd like this,” Damon told The Associated Press, grinning wryly as he watched Jean talk to the crowd.

About 20 people from Jean’s Yele Haiti charity formed a barrier around the back of the food truck, which leaned perilously to one side. The distribution took place right there. Damon tossed the bags to Jean, who placed them on the heads of women as they approached one by one.

Outside the human chain, one young man jumped up and down, waving a DVD of “The Bourne Ultimatum” that he had retrieved from his house after finally recognizing Damon, who laughed and nodded.

The two stars then walked to a nearby church where about 600 people were sheltered. They knelt to talk to an emaciated, elderly man lying on the muddy floor before they began serving food. Damon poured red vegetable sauce over plates of rice that Jean handed out to people.

Damon and Jean encouraged more people to help the United Nations raise more than US$100 million for an estimated 800,000 Haitians in need of aid after four devastating tropical storms and hurricanes since mid-August.

“What I’m doing, I’m doing from the heart because I love Haiti,” Jean said.

Jean, who moved from Haiti to Brooklyn as a child and leapt to fame with The Fugees, has often brought his famous friends to draw attention to the Western Hemisphere’s poorest nation. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt visited with his charity in 2006.

“Hopefully we can make enough noise that people will pay attention,” Damon told reporters earlier at a news conference in the capital, Port-au-Prince. “I truly believe in the people of my country.”

Sep 12 Michael Douglas, Matt Damon to star in new biopic 0
Filed in: Uncategorized

London, Sep 12 : Hollywood actors Michael Douglas and Matt Damon are set to star in a no-holds barred biopic of flamboyant pianist Liberace, who died of AIDS in 1987.

Liberace, who was born Wladziu Valentino Liberace, became a huge star in Las Vegas with live shows during the 1970s and 80s. He died at age 67, reports dailymail.co.uk.

Liberace always denied he was gay, successfully suing the Daily Mirror in 1957 over a Cassandra column that described him as “fruit-flavored”.

Matt Damon has reportedly been tapped to play Scott Thorson, who claimed to have been Liberace’s partner for five years, and sued the pianist in 1982 for $60 million alimony after an acrimonious break-up.

The two actors are teaming up with director Steven Soderbergh.

“Michael sees Liberace as a potential Oscar-winning role. It’ll be good to see Douglas truly flex his acting muscles for the first time in a while,” an insider revealed.

However, the movie is not likely to be made any time soon because of Soderbergh’s busy shooting schedule, according to Variety magazine.

Sep 10 Matt Damon says he fears a Palin administration 1
Filed in: General News

(*NOTE* Everyone is entitled into their own opinion about Sarah Palin and guess what… Matt has his own point of view about her as well. Yes, some people disagree and some others agree, that is is why I am posting up this news story because its solely that. HOWEVER, this is a MATT DAMON FANSITE so if you are going to come here, you are NOT allowed to post NEGATIVE and HATEFUL COMMENTS ABOUT MATT DAMON!)

TORONTO—Matt Damon says the selection of Sarah Palin as the Republican nominee for vice president could end up “like a really bad Disney movie” if John McCain wins the November presidential election.

“You do the actuary tables, there’s a one out of three chance, if not more, that McCain doesn’t survive his first term, and it’ll be President Palin,” said Damon, who was in town to promote ONEXONE, a Canadian children’s charity expanding to the U.S., during the Toronto Film Festival.

“It’s like a really bad Disney movie, “The Hockey Mom.’ Oh, I’m just a hockey mom from Alaska, and she’s president,” said Damon. “She’s facing down Vladimir Putin and using the folksy stuff she learned at the hockey rink. It’s absurd.”

Damon said the public needs to know more about such things as her views on creationism and censorship.

Maria Comella, a spokeswoman for Palin, called the comments “name-calling.”

“It’s not surprising that the Barack Obama and his celebrity supporters continue to tear down Governor Palin with little more than blatant name-calling,” she said. “It’s clear they’re threatened by a candidate who actually has a record of achieving reform and change, while Barack Obama just talks about it.”

Damon is currently appearing in a TV ad titled “Voices,” by the bipartisan, anti-poverty group ONE and its Vote ‘08 project. The voices of others are superimposed as the actor speaks, including Cindy McCain, wife of Republican nominee John McCain; and Michelle Obama, wife of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.

“In this election year, please join the millions of Americans from every party—Democrat, Republican and Independent, who are working together,” goes the ad. “We welcome your voice.”

Sep 9 Matt @ The One x One Gala News & Photos! 0
Filed in: Uncategorized

Matt Damon smiled right alongside the African Children’s Choir at the OneXOne Gala in Toronto last night. Lat year Matt had Ben’s big grin right there with him but this time Damon is rolling solo at the Toronto Film Festival.

About the event and his commitment to it, Damon said, “At a certain point it becomes difficult to look at other children and not see your own. . . Something does change in you once you become a parent. . . There definitely is a shift there that makes you, I think, a little more obsessed about helping children. . . But it’s not like before I had kids, I was like: ‘to heck with those kids!’ ”

I can’t imagine Matt, who seems like the nicest guy in Hollywood, ever saying to heck with anyone, but it’s clear that his newly expanded family of ladies have changed his already great big-hearted perspective for the better.

Sep 4 Matt Damon to topline Fincher’s ‘Torso’ movie? 0
Filed in: Uncategorized

An article from Cleveland’s Plains Dealer discussing how a lack of tax breaks for the movie version of Brian Michael Bendis and Marc Andreyko’s fact-based thriller ‘Torso’ contains a surprising nugget of information: Matt Damon is set to play Elliot Ness in the movie.

‘Torso’ tells of a chapter from Ness’ later career, as safety inspector for the city of Cleveland, when a mysterious serial killer begins leaving dismembered corpses around the town.

In January it was announced that David Fincher (’Zodiac’) is attached to direct.

According to the write-up, Paramount aims to film the movie in Cleveland, but is now balking due to the fact that they can get copious tax breaks elsewhere. Production may move north to Michigan, where new tax laws are attracting a huge influx of filmmakers.

Producer Bill Mechanic said, “It all comes down to what’s the best place to get our movie shot for the least money. We want to shoot the entire movie, the interior and exterior shots, in Cleveland because that’s where the action takes place and so we wouldn’t have to relocate the crew. But without incentives, it doesn’t look like we can afford it.”

A bill introduced by State Rep. Tom Patton, Republican from Strongsville, could facilitate this, but the bill is still wending its way through the legal process.

According to the write-up, the ‘Torso’ production could add up to $100 million.
